About the Bafut Palace & Its People

About Us

The Bafut Palace is the indigenous headquarters of the Bafut Kingdom in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. As a community-owned cultural institution, it serves over 200,000 people across 425 km². Constructed in the 16th century and reconstructed in 1910 with the help of German colonial rulers, the Palace has remained a resilient symbol of unity, cultural identity, and tradition.

In 2006, the Bafut Palace was placed on the World Monuments Watch list of endangered heritage sites. In 2018, it was listed on the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. Today, it welcomes more than 10,000 tourists annually.

🌍 Our Vision

To be a globally respected center for indigenous knowledge, cultural resilience, and peacebuilding — safeguarding traditions while embracing innovation for the future of Bafut and Cameroon.

🎯 Our Mission

The Bafut Palace Cultural Heritage Site exists to foster peace among the Bafut people. Over time, this mission has expanded to include:

  • Heritage conservation and cultural promotion
  • Environmental and wildlife protection
  • Climate change mitigation
  • Promotion of traditional and modern healthcare
  • Tourism, education, and youth mentorship
  • Promotion of inter-religious tolerance and unity

📌 Our Legacy

The Bafut Palace has played a vital role in Cameroon’s history, particularly in the movements for decolonization, independence, and national unification. Today, it continues to serve as the spiritual, political, and cultural heart of the Bafut people.

🤝 Who We Are Today

Rooted in centuries-old tradition yet responsive to modern challenges, the Bafut Palace is more than a royal residence — it is a living institution that unites, heals, and uplifts. Whether through sacred festivals, educational campaigns, or international cultural exchanges, our mission remains clear: to preserve what is sacred and build what is needed.

Across Cameroon and in the diaspora, our Manjong chapters (in Bamenda, Douala, Yaoundé, Buea, UAE, Germany, Qatar, South Africa, Nigeria, and more) carry this vision forward — serving as cultural embassies that strengthen community ties and promote unity wherever Bafut people reside.

“We welcome all who seek to understand, engage, or support this noble heritage.” — The Fon of Bafut
