About the Bafut Palace
The Bafut Palace is one of the most iconic traditional institutions in Cameroon and a living testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Bafut people, a kingdom in the North West Region. Home to the Fon of Bafut, the palace is not only a royal residence but also a sacred space where ancestral traditions, rituals, and royal ceremonies are preserved and practiced.
With over 600 years of history, the Bafut Palace is an architectural marvel featuring traditional courtyards, shrine houses, royal artifacts, and a distinctive Togho-roofed palace building. It serves as the cultural and spiritual heart of the Bafut kingdom, playing host to festivals such as the Abine Mfor and the Mandéle Dance, which bring together chiefs, citizens, and visitors in vibrant celebration.
Recognized by UNESCO and various heritage institutions, the palace remains a vital link between past and present — a place where visitors can explore the richness of Grassfields civilization, witness authentic Cameroonian traditions, and engage with the living legacy of African royalty.
